Cornwall Ontario – A chapter of Cornwall’s history is profiled in The Miracle Maid, the latest book by local author Thom Racine.
The book delves into the incredible untold story of Albertine Lapensée, popularly known as Canada’s first female hockey superstar.
“Albertine was a 17 year-old girl from the East End of Cornwall who scored 128 goals in 28 games over 2 years for the Cornwall Victorias,” says Mr. Racine. “Her prowess, determination and skill thrilled thousands of war-weary Canadians during World War I. And then, on the same day the Canadians stormed Vimy Ridge, Albertine disappeared, never to be heard from again. It is a mystery that has stood for over a century, and one that I was determined to uncover.”
In writing The Miracle Maid, Mr. Racine digs deep into history, utilizing historical records to follow the life of a skilled teenage hockey player who long ago was considered a professional and who really was a trailblazer for the women’s game as we know it today. Mr. Racine, who is a long-time historian, sports enthusiast and author of two other historical biographies, felt the time was right to tell Albertine’s story.
“Here is a story of an incredible athlete who accomplished extraordinary things, but there really was no proper record of her life,” says Mr. Racine. “What little I knew of Albertine made me want to learn more, and the more I learned, the more I knew it was a story that others needed to hear.”
The 289-page book features a number of photographs and images scoured from historical archives. It is available for purchase at select stores including Life’s Little Pleasures and Red Cart Books in Cornwall.

Un nouveau livre raconte l’histoire oubliée d’Albertine Lapensée
Cornwall (Ontario) –The Miracle Maid, le dernier livre de l’auteur local Thom Racine, présente un chapitre mal connu de l’histoire de Cornwall.
Le livre publie pour la première fois l’incroyable histoire d’Albertine Lapensée, reconnue comme la première superstar féminine du hockey au Canada.
« En deux ans, Albertine, une jeune fille de 17 ans originaire de l’est de Cornwall, a marqué 128 buts en 28 matchs pour les Victorias de Cornwall, explique M. Racine. Ses prouesses, sa détermination et son habileté ont enthousiasmé des milliers de Canadiens épuisés par la guerre pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. Et puis, le jour même où les Canadiens ont pris d’assaut la crête de Vimy, Albertine a disparu, pour ne plus jamais donner de nouvelles. C’est un mystère qui dure depuis plus d’un siècle, et que j’étais déterminé à percer ».
En écrivant The Miracle Maid, M. Racine s’est plongé dans l’histoire, utilisant des documents historiques pour suivre la vie d’une adolescente qui était une joueuse de hockey hors pair. Reconnue depuis longtemps comme une légende du hockey, Albertine est en fait une pionnière du jeu féminin tel que nous le connaissons aujourd’hui. M. Racine, historien de longue date, passionné de sport et auteur de deux autres biographies historiques, a estimé que le moment était venu de raconter son histoire.
« Voici l’histoire d’une athlète incroyable qui a accompli des choses extraordinaires, mais dont la vie n’a jamais été relatée, explique M. Racine. Le peu que je savais d’Albertine m’a donné envie d’en savoir plus, et plus j’en apprenais, plus je savais que c’était une histoire que d’autres devaient entendre. »
