Epiphany creates an entrepreneur

Opportunity will often present itself in the most unusual way – and that is exactly how SuzanneRamsay describes how she ventured into entrepreneurship with her new business Suzanne’s Woodworking.

suzanneRecently Ms. Ramsay was looking for something to keep herself busy for a couple of hours and decided to tinker with some woodworking equipment that was in storage for a family member.

“The time went by so fast and the smell of the wood was almost intoxicating,” she said.  “Then the next day I couldn’t wait to get back to it.  I soon realized this is where I am meant to be, this is what I am meant to do!”

Growing up, Ms. Ramsay worked alongside her Dad as he was always working on renovations and repairs for family.  She learned many skills along the way and grew to love the smell of the wood.  She also has a very creative side and thoroughly enjoyed repairing and creating furniture pieces, mouldings, etc.

“I started working when I was just 13 and have had several different jobs, but it was always just a job,” said Ms. Ramsay.  “I reached a point in my life where I was looking to work at something that would really mean something to me, something where I would look forward to the work day.”

Suzanne’s Woodworking is the result of that epiphany.  A recent grad from the Self Employment Assistance Program at St. Lawrence College, Ms. Ramsay now offers custom wood products such as urns and luminaries, keepsake boxes, frames, and various pieces of giftware.  She creates custom signage, does vinyl cutting for signs and wall decor, and also offers cast acrylic trophies and plaques.

A specialty that Suzanne’s Woodworking offers is restoration and re-creation of wood mouldings.

“The mouldings in historic homes and buildings are absolutely beautiful,” she said.  “You simply cannot purchase them anymore and many people want to maintain that heritage.  I can repair and/or re-create these mouldings, whether they be part of a door frame, along the floor or ceiling or part of a featured built-in or mantle.  Custom work is definitely my specialty.”
